What to Expect from Telehealth Consultations

Speaking to a Doctor from Your Room

3/3/20262 min read

For many care home residents and their families, the idea of seeing a doctor without leaving the room still feels unfamiliar. But telehealth consultations are now a well-established part of modern healthcare, and for older adults in care settings, they offer a genuinely better experience than an anxious wait for an in-person visit. Here is exactly what to expect.

Before the Consultation

Preparation makes a telehealth appointment run smoothly. Care home staff play an important role in getting things ready ahead of time. Key steps include:

  • Ensuring the resident is comfortable, seated or propped up clearly in view of the screen

  • Having a list of current medications and any recent changes to hand

  • Noting down the symptoms or concerns to be discussed, including when they started

  • Checking that the device being used, whether a tablet, laptop, or phone, is charged and connected

  • Making sure the room is reasonably quiet and well lit so the GP can see and hear clearly

A member of care staff should ideally be present to support the resident and assist with any communication needs.

During the Consultation

Once connected, the GP will introduce themselves and confirm the resident's identity and details. The consultation follows the same structure as an in-person appointment. The doctor will ask about current symptoms, review relevant medical history, and may ask staff to assist with simple observations such as checking a pulse or describing a wound.

Residents and family members should feel comfortable asking questions. The GP will explain their assessment clearly and outline any next steps, whether that is a prescription, a follow-up visit, or a referral for further investigation.

What Happens After the Consultation

One of the key advantages of telehealth through RTCGP is what happens immediately after the call. Clinical notes are recorded digitally in real time, creating a clear and timestamped record of the consultation. If a prescription is needed, same-day delivery can be arranged so treatment begins without delay.

Where further assessment is needed, the GP can coordinate doorstep diagnostics such as blood tests or imaging, arrange an onsite visit, or if urgent transfer is required, facilitate access to private ambulance services. Nothing falls through the gap after the call ends.

Is Telehealth Suitable for Every Situation?

Telehealth works well for a wide range of clinical concerns including infection reviews, medication queries, pain assessment, mental health concerns, and routine monitoring. It is not always appropriate for situations requiring physical examination or emergency intervention.

In those cases, RTCGP GPs will advise on the right course of action and ensure the appropriate support is arranged quickly. The telehealth consultation is the starting point, not the ceiling of what is available.

A Familiar Face in an Unfamiliar Format

For residents and families, knowing that a GP is accessible from the comfort of a familiar room, at weekends and out of hours, provides genuine reassurance. Telehealth is not a lesser version of care. In many situations, it is simply a smarter, faster, and kinder way to deliver it.
